Taking Back the Web: How Open Source Content Management Systems are Changing the Way We Work
Ric Shreves, Water&Stone
The emergence of viable Open Source solutions for Content Management is a
significant recent trend with implications for business systems owners,
developers, and proprietary software business models. Mambo, which surprised
many pundits by capturing the Best of Show award at LinuxWorld 2005, is but
one example of this maturing area of Open Source. It is my proposal to present a
paper discussing (1) the current state of health of the Open Source CMS
movement, including a report on the major players, (2) the impact of Open
Source CMS on existing proprietary software manufacturers, and (3) where Open
Source CMS products fit into the IT mix for business systems owners. The
presentation emphasizes real world applications of the technology by illustrating
the points via examination of installations by early adopters in both the SME and
enterprise space. Attendees will leave the presentation with greater awareness
of: (1) the current state of the market, (2) who the key players are, (3) how the
systems are being used, (4) where weaknesses still exist, and (5) what the future
is likely to bring.
